Despite the bad weather recently, I managed to get a fab view of Venus above a cresent shaped Moon. The Moon reminded me of the Cheshire cat’s grin in Alice in Wonderland. But then I got driven indoors by increasing winds, ah well, at least I got half an hour with the stars.
Yet again the British weather has put a stop to my viewing of the night sky. If it’s not the rain then it’s high winds. I often think that to be an amateur astronomer you need the patience of a saint. But, when you get your first clear night in ages it always seems to be worth the wait.
Rainbow created by the Moon
Check out this image of a Moonbow (a rainbow created by the Moon). It was taken by a friend in Northumberland who is lucky enough not to be bothered by light pollution.
For anyone that’s interested in astrophotography the last couple of days (if it was clear where you are) should have presented you a great opportunity to get a wonderful image of the Moon. Tonight should provide a similar chance with the Moon being close to Aldebaran and the Hyades. Happy imaging and hopes for clear weather.
This time of year is great for astronomers as the cold clear whether is perfect for observing. Only thing is you end up freezing your assets to obtain that perfect view, which despite everything going numb always seems to be worth it. Nothing quite beats that feeling at 2am when you seem to be the only person absorbed in the beauty of the Universe.
